     After a brief spell in 1914 in the Balloon Section of the RNVR, Nigel joined the Room 40 codebreakers in the Admiralty. On 17 Jan 1917 he deciphered the famous Zimmerman telegram whose disclosure led directly to the USA's declaration of war against Germany.

Zimmerman was the German Foreign Minister, and the eponymous telegram was sent to the German Ambassador in Mexico. He was instructed to propose a German/Mexican alliance against the USA, with a promise of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico should the venture succeed. Zimmerman also announced unrestricted submarine warfare in the Atlantic against ships of all nationalities.

Although the message had in fact been intercepted during transmission via the Atlantic underwater cable, Britain mounted an elaborate and successful subterfuge to convince the USA that it came from a copy stolen in Mexico City, to disguise Room 40's codebreaking success.

Between the wars Nigel lived at Iver in Buckinghamshire, and managed the Medici Society. He joined the Bletchley Park codebreakers when hostilities recommenced, and in 1941 became the first person to report news of German atrocities in Eastern Europe to Churchill. He stayed on at GCHQ until his retirement in 1951.
